Serpentine stone is actually a stone abundant in nature that can be mined in many parts of the world. However, the black serpentine stone processed in Antakya is a stone unique to the Antakya, Eastern Mediterranean, and Cyprus plate. This stone, which is identified with Antakya, has been processed for 2350 years. Even the seals of the Late Hittite period were made of serpentine stone. This stone still attracts people as a gift item due to its easy processing, talisman and other features.
Antakya has been a home to the masters that can best process the serpentine stone since the Roman period. While sculptures, figurines, necklaces, candle holders, oil lamps, vases and other objects handcrafted by these masters contribute to the city tourism in the souvenir market, examples of work from Ancient period such as jewelry, seals, and writing plates are exhibited in the Antakya Archeology Museum.
