POPULATION AND SOCIETY

Hatay surface area is 5867 km². 46.1% of the provincial lands are mountains, 33.5% are plains and 20.4% are plateaus. Antakya is the central district of Hatay, which is one of the border cities of the Republic of Turkey, is located in the southernmost of our country (36° 10 north latitude – 36° 06 East longitude).

Hatay has bordered on Syria in the East; it has the Mediterranean Sea in the West and the South, Adana in the Northwest, Osmaniye in the North and Gaziantep in the Northeast. Hatay has a very large area. The Amik Plain, which has a fertile soil between the Nur Mountains (Amanos) extending from the north to the southwest and the plateaus between the Kel Mountain and the Syria plateau, forms a coastal plain extending in a strip in the west. The main rivers of the city are the Orontes, Nestos and Afrin rivers. There are two dam for irrigation purposes (Tahtaköprü and Yarseli).
